New challenges are good for each of us. Not only are the boys learning wonderful things about our nation's history, and the brave, principled people who have made and kept it a reality, they are facing their own challenges. Dozens of little things are just a little bit hard each day: heat, humidity, thirst, hunger, being responsible to wake up early, going to bed early, dressing properly, controlling desires to spend, waiting for others or for some event, boredom, homesickness, the impact of their choices and the choices of others.
I see boys learning a little more each day to be aware of their powerful emotions and take more positive approaches than only complaining about them. I see them being thoughtful and considerate of others. I see them taking on a little more responsibility for their own actions. They are coming out of their shells a little more, and growing so much. Me too! These are the joys of being a scouting leader.
Today was a wonderful day of learning. Yesterday they learned how the leaders of the colonies debated for months to define our constitution. Today, they saw the after effects of the compromise on slavery, and learned all about the gory battle that took 51,000 lives in three days, turning the tide of the Civil War. We had a great guide, a 29 year veteran of guiding around Gettysburg, who had the boys physically and mentally engaged in the history of that great battle. There were so many 'chance' occurrences that could have tipped the battle and the war in another direction. It was clear that war is terrible, but the courage, honor and actions of brave men were fascinating to all of us.
We had a box lunch at the visitors center then drove on to DC. We heard a great scout presentation about President Lincoln on the way to an all you can eat pizza/pasta/salad dinner. Tonight we are in a very large and nicely appointed Hilton hotel. The boys had some free time and took over the pool and Gym. thanks for the photos brother Stobe!
All are safe and well. Good night!
