At Fort McHenry, we learned about the war of 1812, and why Baltimore was so vital after the destruction of Washington D.C. The British Bombarded the fort in order to take it, and then reach fortifications outside Baltimore in order to bomb them. They failed, and Francis Scott Key, the young lawyer on a diplomatic mission who was detained at sea, watched the battle. In the morning, he could still see the 15 star spangled banner with 15 stripes and penned a poem that would become our national anthem much later. The only two places that are allowed to fly that flag are Fort McHenry and the Marine barracks we were all at last night.
The boys learning from "1812 infantry" at the fort.
It's a hot, muggy day and we're looking forward to catching the game!
