Day 5 Jambo: Trek! Not!

We were up at 6 again, had a French Toast, bacon, cereal and juice breakfast and cleaned up our camp. Then a 17 year old guide from the order of the arrow and led us 3 miles to a trail head on the west side of the camp.

We then hiked about 3 miles up an Appalachian mountain to the summit of the property.   (Matt Kay made it!  A big goal for him.  Sorry mom, this is the only picture he will let me take just of him. He likes the Bows!)

Here the BSA has set up dozens of Native American and pioneer exhibits including war and rain dances, lashing construction projects, historical displays, gun shooting, spear throwing, crafts, games and lectures by people in typical costume.

The boys engaged in all sorts of activities.  Native American bead work:

Well,  life is what happens when you're making other plans!

We had a full-blown Appalachian  thunderstorm 30 min after I typed that last sentence.  The Boy Scouts of America are very safe people. They herded us off the mountain quickly.  So that was a quick 12 mile round-trip hike.

The boys all hiked back to camp.

Some helped Clean the bathroom, others went to a water challenge course and others ran to get their Thomas S Monson medal.

Here are some more boys and their favorite activities:

Colson Kleinman:  Water Obstacle Course:

Jordan (Pappy) Papenfuss:  BMX and Mountain bike:

Luke Madsen:  Skateboarding:

Austin Nielson:  BMX!:

Tanner Bronson:  BMX and Skateboarding:

Tanner Obray:  Scuba: (this was artificial perspiration by the way, he wanted to highlight how hot it's been. :)  )

Amadeus Peterson:  Water Challenge Course:

Tucker Pike:  Scuba!

Cameron Tagge:  Mountain Biking:

Alec Saeva:  the knives and matches!  ;)

Oh, by the way, we are still mostly city kids.  When we come across benign nature, we still get freaked out a bit!

Oh and one more thing.  The boys are becoming really good friends!

And yes, that is laundry. Done by hand. By the boys.  I know, right?  Now they can do that at home, no?
